A redstone block is a permanent power source: it outputs strong power level 15 in all six directions, forever, and unlike a lever it can never be toggled off.

Bedrock note Because it is movable and always-on, a redstone block is the standard “engine” of flying machines — a piston shoves the power source forward to drive the next push.
